Having A Problem With Pack Rats?
Are They Eating All Of Your Poisonous Bait And Still Aren’t Going Away?

Pest control professionals, especially in California, are now discovering a new problem – pack rats! Over the past couple of years, more and more pest professionals are finding that these pack rats are eating every single bait block that they put in their stations, but the rats are not going away. In fact, some homeowners are so upset about all the rodent droppings they see on their patios, porches, and around their homes, that they are threatening to fire their pest control companies.

Why is this happening now and why didn’t it happen before? Is it because the State of California outlawed second generation anticoagulant rodent baits? We don’t know the answer to that, but it is a strange coincidence, isn’t it? What we do know is that our rodent baits are literally disappearing from our bait stations faster than we can fill them up, and the pack rats keep multiplying.

The problem is that these pack rats are probably packing the baits in their cheeks, and taking the bait back to their nests where they will bury it. In other words, if they aren’t swallowing it now, they probably aren’t going to die any time soon. What can a frustrated pest control tech do to solve this problem? At Trapper Jack’s, we recommend you start using snap traps in your bait stations, and to bait them with Trapper Jack’s Macadamia Nut Rodent Lure.

A good example of how well this strategy works is a home we recently dealt with in Southern California. The homeowner was concerned about the numerous rat droppings she was finding on her patios, porches, and around her home. The pest control tech placed eight rodent bait stations around this home, and serviced them on a monthly-basis for four consecutive months. The situation
did not improve, the homeowner complained that she was seeing even more rodent droppings than ever before, and she was ready to fire her tech. That is when we suggested to the tech that she replace her poison bait with snap traps. She installed eight snap traps, baited them with Trapper Jack’s, and 48 hours later she had caught seven pack rats. She trapped two more a couple of days after that. The homeowner was very happy to finally see some results.

This trapping strategy has also been used to control pack rats at other homes with very good results. These rats love Trapper Jack’s!  Are you having problems controlling roof rats or mice on the exterior of homes and buildings? You’ll find that using snap traps with Trapper Jack’s Macadamia Nut Rodent Lure will serve you well.  One of the big benefits of trapping is that you can often get quick results. Another huge benefit is that you can put the results of your work in writing so your clients will know that what you are doing is working. When they see your results, it will add value to your service!

Trapper Jack’s Tips:

  • When doing trapping on the exterior of homes and buildings, we do not recommend that you place traps near entry doors, or in areas where people normally hang out. This is because you probably aren’t going to be servicing these accounts on a daily basis, and we don’t want for your clients to be annoyed by foul odors, or flies and insects that may attack the dead rodents.
Instead, place them in areas where your clients do not frequently visit.
  • Are your clients complaining about seeing rodent droppings in certain areas around their home? By placing your traps away from those areas, you can often lure the rats to another area where the droppings won’t be so noticeable.
  • Base your service intervals on the size of the rodent population. Large rodent populations will require more frequent visits and you’ll need to educate your clients on what they need. Once the population has been reduced, you can reduce the service frequency. In some cases, only monthly visits will be needed to maintain control.
